Lou Banach reached the height of his career at the 1984 Olympics when he won a gold medal at the 220 pound weight class in dominating fashion. Banach won the Olympic title at Los Angeles with four falls and an 11-1 decision. The final, against an American competing for Syria, lasted 61 seconds.

At the University of Iowa, Banach - who only weighed 210 pounds and wrestled at heavyweight - was known for taking on opponents who doubled him in size. The Hawkeye star won two NCAA titles in 1981 & 1983 and placed third in 1982. His overall college record was 90-14-2. He is considered one of the greatest college heavyweights to ever step foot on a mat.
